The Brown-Norway rat model of allergen-induced asthma, which has been used extensively to evaluate the pathophysiological mechanisms of this disease, reflects many features of human allergic asthma, including both early and late phase reactions, increased antigen-specific IgE levels following active immunization [23], increased bronchial responsiveness to multiple stimuli following allergen challenge [24], and airway inflammation [17].
