It has been found to be co-localised with hyaluronan, CD44 and tenascin in the pericellular matrix in tumours and because of its ability to interact with modulators of glioma migration and invasion, such as hyaluronan, tenascin, CD44, integrins and epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) (Wu et al, 2005), versican may contribute to the malignant properties of glioma cells. This evidence concerns the gene VCAN and central nervous system cancer.
