This alternative splice results in the in-frame deletion of the sequence coding for the sterile alpha motif (SAM) domain near the N-terminus of SAMD9. Although it is only detected in a quarter of the normal and tumor tissues tested, it has potential to play a dominate-negative role in the functioning of the main common SAMD9 transcript with the SAM domain.
