While bezafibrate and clofibrate both induce fatty acidoxidation enzymes [24],not all of the effects of thesecompounds are the same with regard to lipid metabolism.Bezafibrate reduces plasma apolipoprotein CIII (apoCIII) andtriglyceride levels, while clofibrate does not [25].ApoCIII is associated with the development of diabetes and a high level ofapoCIII is used as a marker for hypertriglyceridemia which poses acardiovascular risk [26,27]. This evidence concerns the gene APOC3 and diabetes mellitus.
