The identified 40-amino acid VGF23–62 peptide may have a distinct function in the schizophrenia/depression disease process, may reflect a disease-associated protease/peptidase dysfunction, and/or may imply the presence of pathological processes in neurons since VGF is selectively expressed in neurons in brain, particularly in the hypothalamus (for review see [16,17]). The gene discussed is LAP3; the disease is depressive disorder.
