They form a subgroup of a Scottish stroke population which has been demonstrated to have an association with 5-lipoxygenase activating protein, an important mediator of the activity of cellular 5-Lipoxygenase (5-LO) which is a key enzyme in the biosynthesis of leukotrienes, and may thus be involved in atherosclerosis by proinflammatory mechanisms [34].
