Recently, the gene encoding survivin has been described as being selectively expressed in some of the most common human neoplasms, such as breast cancer [30], pancreatic cancer [31], esophageal carcinoma [32], primary glioblastoma [33], ovarian cancer [34], and melanomas [35], but is undetectable in normally differentiated tissues [31]. The gene discussed is BIRC5; the disease is breast carcinoma.
