In all, 35 of the 43 patients recruited with NSCLC (82%), 15 of the 40 patients with melanoma (37%) and 13 of the 30 (44%) with breast cancer had an APPR defined as a CRP ⩾10 mg l−1 (Mahmoud and Rivera, 2002). The gene discussed is CRP; the disease is non-small cell lung carcinoma.
