HIF1A and neoplasm: Hypoxia and the hypoxia-inducible factor-1 (HIF-1) pathway regulate the expression of a diverse group of genes that promote tumour growth and are involved in tissue invasion, angiogenesis, cell proliferation, glycolysis and pH regulation (Semenza, 2001; Wykoff et al, 2001; Harris, 2002; Maxwell and Ratcliffe, 2002; Pugh and Ratcliffe, 2003).
