The tumour suppressor role of CTCF was suspected because of its involvement in regulating the expression of some genes that are directly implicated in cancer (i.e., MYC, IGF2, p53, P27, p19/ARF and BRCA1) (Bell and Felsenfeld, 2000; Klenova et al, 2002; Qi et al, 2003), its cell growth inhibitory effect and its genetic mapping to 16q22.1.
