INS and Hyperglycemia: Chronic hyperglycemia leads to auto-oxidation of glucose and causes nonenzymatic glycation of proteins through Maillard’s reaction.1,5 In these processes, reactive oxygen species are produced.1 The reactive oxygen species are well known as important risk factors for cardiovascular disease9,23 and cancer.9,24 The reactive oxygen species cause pancreatic β-cell damage and lead to insulin pathocrinia.5 In an animal experimental study,25 hyperglycemia caused oxidative damage to the pancreatic β-cells of GK rats, a model of Type 2 diabetes.
